Cristina Bocaranda’s design for the custom Map rug shows her favorite
spots to go in the “Capital of the World”.

Venezuelan textile designer Cristina Bocaranda born and raised in Caracas loves New York and has been living in the “Capital of the World” for the last 7 years. Bocaranda graduated from The Fashion Institute of Technology and for her first custom rug design she maps out her favorite spots to go around the city.

Bocaranda had the idea for Map Rug while she was attending New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology studying Textile and Surface design.  Inspired by and passionate about both graphic design and fashion Bocaranda considers textile design the perfect intersection of both worlds.

The concept for the rug is that every New Yorker has his or her “own private and personal New York’.

Taking inspiration from social media (she has a robust following on Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram) and specifically by her own Instagram photo map Bocaranda wanted to design a carpet that could be personalized by the owner with their favorite places to dine, shop and visit.

The design for the urban grid and aerial view of New York remain intact, but each rug can be customized using different colors of yarn to highlight the owner’s favorite New York addresses.

Map Rug won Bocaranda first prize in a rug design competition at FIT and now available exclusively at Crosby Street Studios. It is hand-tufted and made from wool and silk and can be customized to client’s color specifications.
