Capsule: Gallery I

When artisan mastery meets artful invention and technical innovation, contemporary design evolves, as in Crosby Street Studios’ capsule collection, Gallery I. This mini collection features four painterly designs: Dew, Monarch, Muse, and Wash, which were all hand-knotted in Nepal.

We believe the design and production process should reflect the same amount of care. That’s why the touch of the hand begins in the company’s artistic atelier, where our design team creates the imagery that becomes the art underfoot.

The artistic techniques range from the classic to the experimental—from watercolor and gouache to painted plastic printed onto paper; crumpled aluminum foil, translated through photography. For Gallery I, each of the four was hand painted with a combination of watercolors and dyes employing wet on wet techniques, as well as experimenting with painting on plastic, before transferring to watercolor paper.

The handwork in the design studio is just one touch of a more significant, hand-to-hand, collaborative endeavor that involves the technique and artistry of yarn makers, dyers, weavers, and finishers from around the world.  All of the handmade rugs in the capsule collection Gallery I can be custom sized and colored to order.

As a member of Goodweave, Crosby Street Studios is committed to ensuring best practices in the production of every rug it offers.
