Lapchi Rugs at Crosby Street Studios

Crosby Street Studios has just received an inventory of rugs from the new Battilossi for Lapchi collections (four collections in all) that are all designed in Italy and hand–woven in Lahore, the Punjab in Pakistan.

Lapchi LLC. was founded 2001 by, by partners Kerry Smith and Salman Khan who together developed new business models for the producing and displaying of hand-woven custom rug for clients.  Lapchi uses only the highest quality of untreated materials and streamlined production methods and values the project needs of the designer client while being personally committed to improving the standards of the industry.

Known as a pioneer in the field of custom rugs with Lapchi’s insistence on a rigorous design process that includes milestone sign-offs to ensure quality and color; digital renderings and sample strike-offs to ensure satisfaction with the final custom carpet. Lapchi, like Crosby Street Studios, support GoodWeave, the nonprofit organization working to end child labor in the carpet industry and to provide educational opportunities to children in Nepal, India, and Afghanistan.

The collection is named after, Maurizio Battilossi, who began developing contemporary carpet collections in 1994 reflecting his interest in modern rug design and textile construction and building on his family heritage of antique rugs and textiles with the family-run Battilossi gallery based in Torino, Italy.

Maurizio has described his design aesthetic as one based on the concept of mixing texture and creating a collage of patterns through the eye of an artist.  He has collaborated with inspired European designers like Draga Obradovic and Gennaro Avallone and sources the best raw materials and skilled craftsmanship unique to Asia.

Battilossi rugs demonstrate a sophisticated level of design virtuosity by integrating the aesthetics of edging, braided fringes, and finishes alongside pattern and color.  It is Maurizio’s keen attention to detail and the weaving structure and determining of the appropriate surface shearing, that helps to create the interesting texture variations which deepen the appreciation of the design.

The Battislossi rugs are handcrafted entirely from untreated wools from both Pakistan and Afghanistan. They can be customized in size and shape following Lapchi’s production systems and range of colors. This collection includes multiple patterns a textile assemblage from Maurizio Battilossi that embodies Lapchi’s standard of innovative design and luxury rugs.

Nicholas Di Donato has 15 years of experience in the design industry, working in both the wholesale and to the trade carpet and textile design showroom businesses. Before A. M. Collections Di Donato got his small company experience working for four years at New York-based Carpet Innovations a company that supplied commercial grade products for the trade and to carpet wholesalers. There he had the unique opportunity to work directly with the owner and to see how all aspects of the business worked together. Presently he works side-by-side with principals Tony Mott and Jim Mcfadden in overseeing the long-term strategic goals of the company as well as the day-to-day issues of a young company.
